I’d say I’m a pretty normal guy, with big ambitions and dreams, and a lot of people I want to make proud. I guess you could say I don’t want to just merely exist, but I want to influence. By that, I mean I want to make the people closest to me proud in everything I do.
My family is the biggest part of my life and everything I do, in some way, shape or form, is for them. Being a son, brother and uncle are special things to me.
I’m the very proud owner of BRAV Endurance, a small endurance sports sock company. That brings me so much joy and accomplishment on a daily basis and also enhances my love of the world of endurance sport itself. I get to meet and speak to so many amazing an inspirational people on their own special journeys; that reaches me on a personal level.
Before triathlon I was a keen runner, running for my local country club (Islwyn) and before that I swam for the country from the age of 11. The most special moment for me, definitely, was completing my first ever half marathon in Cardiff. I’d only been running for about 7 months prior and to cross the line in 1:44 took every ounce of my being, but it was one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. It really fuelled the fire to start my journey and achieve even higher accolades in the realms of endurance sports and see what my body was capable of withstanding.
Triathlon is by far the most inclusive sport I’ve ever been involved with and what I want to achieve, more than anything, is to inspire other people through the sport. I’m never going to be the fastest, but I can be a superhero to my niece and nephew and hopefully reach people and help them to tell their story through my exploits.
If I can create lifelong friends, experiences and memories through this sport then I will have achieved everything I set out to. The experience of bringing my family together through the sport, and gaining an even bigger family within it, is indescribable.
2020 was a year of massive change for me. My athletic life had to take a back seat so that I could focus on my personal life as reality took over.
Not only did we have Covid to contend with, but we suddenly lost my Nan, and then shortly after my Grandad to dementia. Shortly after, my father unexpectedly fell ill and was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer. His battle was very short and by the summer of 2020 I had lost him, too. He was the centre of our family and one of my biggest supporters. 2020 completely changed my outlook in many ways; how I look at the world and my approach to life.
My 2021 goal is quite simple: I want to get the spark back. Not just the spark for triathlon, but my spark for life. 2020 changed me in so many ways, but I’m hoping it can help me become stronger and more resilient, as well as more compassionate, in everything I do.
I want to honour my love for my father with a very special challenge - completing the NC500 – with the help and guidance of RÁS. Other than my family, my company is my main priority and brings me the greatest sense of joy. I’ve met some amazing people from all across the world of endurance sport and my hope for 2021 is that I can strengthen these bonds and create new ones.
